Cracked teeth are a common dental concern that can cause significant discomfort and compromise the health of your smile. The severity of a crack determines the appropriate treatment, which ranges from minor cosmetic repairs to more advanced restorative procedures. If left untreated, a cracked tooth can worsen, leading to infection or tooth loss.

Recognizing Cracked Teeth

Cracks in teeth do not always present obvious symptoms. However, common signs include pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures and occasional sharp discomfort when releasing biting pressure. The pain may be intermittent, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact location of the damage.

Types of Cracked Teeth and Their Treatment

Craze Lines

Craze lines are small cracks that appear in the enamel and are typically superficial. They do not pose a threat to the health of the tooth but may be treated for cosmetic reasons.

Fractured Cusps

When a cusp, or the pointed part of a tooth, weakens and breaks off, it is known as a fractured cusp. These cracks often do not affect the tooth’s nerve, making them less painful. A dental crown is usually recommended to restore the tooth’s structure and function.

Cracked Tooth

A cracked tooth involves a fracture that extends from the chewing surface toward the root. Depending on the extent of the crack, the pulp inside the tooth may become damaged, leading to infection or the need for a root canal. If the crack extends below the gumline, tooth extraction may be necessary.

Split Tooth

A split tooth occurs when a crack extends deep enough to separate the tooth into distinct sections. In some cases, a portion of the tooth can be saved with endodontic treatment and a crown. However, more severe splits require extraction.

Vertical Root Fracture

These fractures begin at the root and extend toward the chewing surface. They are often difficult to detect until symptoms such as localized gum swelling or infection appear. Vertical root fractures usually require extraction, though endodontic surgery may be an option in select cases.

Today I had oral surgery to remove a tooth that I had cracked due to teeth grinding. From discovery to pre-opt to extraction of the tooth it went very smoothly. Everyone was efficient, friendly, took time to answer my questions. I couldn’t believe how easily my IV was inserted- first time! I even had a staff member walk me outside to the car. Thank you to everyone! Once again 5 stars!

I’ve been going to Dynamic Dentistry for a few years now and they are by far the best dental office that I have ever seen. Their Hygienist, Linda, is great! She knows the areas I have that are sensitive and always works around them very carefully. Dr. Farr is also great. She’s always done everything possible to make sure I have little to no pain during procedures. I recommend them 100%!
